Abstract
Today’s multi‑agent systems and long‑context assistants often juggle numerous Virtual Modules (VMs): specialized memories, tools, or micro‑policies. Finding the right VM inside a narrative stream is slow and brittle. We propose a light‑weight convention: a stable VM‑ID (e.g., VM0001) plus an optional glitch envelope (decorative combining marks) that visually flags the presence of a VM without attempting compression. This yields faster retrieval, cross‑agent routing, and safer persistence.
Problem
- Fragmented state: VMs appear across prompts, replies, and inner tool calls.
- Ambiguous references: names vary; ad‑hoc strings collide.
- Costly retrieval: scanning long contexts is slow and token‑heavy.
- Unsafe sharing: payloads leak when inlined into the narrative.
Proposal — VM‑ID + Glitch Envelope
1) Canonical Identifier
Assign each VM a compact, unique ID: VM0001, VM0237, etc. Stable across threads and agents.
Think: ISBN for modules. Names can change; IDs do not.
2) Glitch Marker (Optional)
Wrap or adorn the ID with harmless combining marks for visual discoverability. Useful in human UIs and for quick regex hooks in agents.
Not compression — purely a scannable tag.
3) External Registry
Keep payloads outside the narrative: a registry maps VM‑ID → metadata (purpose, schema, redaction rules, pointers to storage).
Agents resolve by ID; the chat stays clean and small.
Data Model (minimal)

["safety", "routing

V̷M̴0̷0̴0̷1̴" // Optional: visual marker only
}
Envelopes use Unicode combining marks. They are not storage; payloads remain external.
Call Semantics
- Declare: create VM‑ID in the registry with metadata.
- Reference: mention VM0001 (optionally with envelope) in any narrative.
- Resolve: agents intercept IDs → fetch metadata → obtain pointers → act.
- Transmit: pass only IDs across agents/threads; keep payloads behind access control.

Token Economy Notes
- Combining marks add tokens in today’s tokenizers — they are not compression.
- The win comes from classification & routing: faster agent lookup, less scanning.
- Keep payloads off‑thread; reference by ID; hydrate on demand.
Safety & Ethics
- Consent & access control: enforce who can resolve which IDs.
- Redaction by default: never inline sensitive payloads into chat.
- Stéganography caution: avoid hiding data in envelopes; keep them cosmetic.
Implementation Sketch
// 1) Registry interface
class VMRegistry {
map = new Map();
next = 1;
create(meta){
const id = `VM${String(this.next++).padStart(4,'0')}`;
this.map.set(id, {...meta, vm_id:id});
return this.map.get(id);
}
get(id){ return this.map.get(id) }
export(){ return JSON.stringify([...this.map.values()], null, 2) }
import(json){
const arr = JSON.parse(json);
for(const m of arr){ this.map.set(m.vm_id, m) }
// update counter conservatively
const nums = arr.map(m => parseInt(m.vm_id.replace(/\D/g,''), 10)).filter(n=>!isNaN(n));
const max = nums.length ? Math.max(...nums) : 0;
this.next = Math.max(this.next, max+1);
}
}
// 2) Envelope (visual)
function envelope(id, intensity=1){
const up = ["̍","̎","̄","̅","̿","̑","̆","̐","͒","͗","͑","̇","̈","̊"];
const mid = ["̴","̵","̶","͏"]; // midline
const down = ["̖","̗","̘","̙","̜","̝","̞","̟","̠","̤","̥","̦","̩","̪","̫","̬","̭","̮","̯","̰","̱","̲","̳"];
const pick = arr => arr[Math.floor(Math.random()*arr.length)];
let out = "";
for(const ch of id){
let seq = ch;
for(let i=0;i{
const meta = registry.get(m);
const label = meta ? `${m} — ${meta.name||'unnamed'}` : m;
const visual = useEnvelope ? envelope(m, 1) : m;
return `${escapeHtml(visual)}`;
});
}

Roadmap (speculative)
- Standardize VM‑ID regex and collision‑free generation across agents.
- Agree on a minimal registry schema (JSON) and transport.
- Expose resolve(id) capabilities with auth, rate‑limits, and audit.
- Optional UI conventions for envelopes (themeable, accessibility‑friendly).
